WH 2 (fresh.) - Week of 6/15 - 6/19

Hi World History,

We are in the last full week of the school year!  With our last day on Tuesday, 6/23, you have almost arrived at a much needed and hard-earned break.  Our deadline for work (Friday, 6/12) has come and gone, and I will be entering the last of our classwork over the next couple of days.  If you are wondering about your Semester 2 grade, keep reading and see below.  Here is this week’s schedule and some announcements:

The plan for this week (6/15 – 6/19)

  • Item 1: watch a video/film on a Semester 2 topic this week.  The video will be posted in Teams on Monday morning (6/15) and will have a prompt to generate some discussion.  As you view it at some point this week, leave a reply on the post (for example your thoughts, reactions, or questions you have).

  • Item 2: there is a Microsoft Forms survey that will also be available from Monday morning until Friday, 6/19. This is optional (not required), but I think it will be a useful exercise for you especially given the year that we have had!  In the survey you’ll find some things to get you reflecting about the year, your growth, online learning, and what worked or didn’t work well for you.  Along with giving you a sense of “closure” to the year, it will also provide me with info on how to better design online learning in the future (should we have to continue it in the fall…fingers crossed that we don’t have to).  Thank you in advance for your thoughtful feedback!

Other announcements / reminders:

**The deadline for all missing work WAS FRIDAY, 6/12.  I will be grading and entering the last of our classwork in Skyward over the next couple of days.  By mid-week, you should see all work reflected in Skyward.

- Your overall Semester 2 grade will be your grade as it is OR your Baseline grade---whichever is higher.  Remember that this assumes you have attempted to engage with online learning.  Another way of putting this: if online work moves your current “S2 grade” above your Baseline (MT3/Q3), then you get your S2 grade as your final semester grade; alternatively, if your S2 grade ends up lower than your Baseline, then your Baseline will be your final semester grade.  If you are unsure of where you stand, please reach out.

- Final semester grades will be letter grades A - D or an Incomplete. If a student earns an Incomplete for World History, then they must make up that credit in the future, as World History is a core class.

- I will have my last Office Hours this Monday afternoon from 3:30 – 4:30 PM and this Wednesday from 10:00 – 11:00 AM.  During these times, I will be available for quick email responses to questions and for calls (either Zoom or the “Meet” feature within Microsoft Teams).  Please let me know in advance if you would like to schedule a call.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if/when you have a question, need help with anything, etc.  Cheers and talk to you soon,

- Mr. Matzen
